Trip Around Monroe, New York https://photographybysamanthafinch.com/blog/2017/2/trip-around-monroe-new-york Now, if you know me, you know that I am not a winter person. Sure, there are moments when it is nothing short of a beautiful time of year, but overall I hate the cold and thus hate the freezing temps of winter. This new year, I am making an effort to go out and photograph whenever I have the chance. On this particular day- I simply couldn't resist the urge to go outside. Here are some of my favorite images from around the Lakes Road area of Monroe, NY.

Baby Colin https://photographybysamanthafinch.com/blog/2017/2/baby-colin      A few weeks ago, I had the amazing opportunity to photograph this adorable baby boy named Colin. After unforeseen circumstances forced us to reschedule our original shoot, when we were finally able to meet I was lucky enough to document this little bundle of joy in his entire bronco loving glory, if love While it was near impossible to get him to relax, I was still able to capture a few great shots of him but perhaps my favorite part of the shoot was seeing how great his parents Sarah and Matt were with him.  Their love for this little boy was undeniable, and a true pleasure to witness. Check some of my favorite images below!''

Traveling The Tri-State: New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey https://photographybysamanthafinch.com/blog/2017/2/traveling-the-tri-state-new-york-pennsylvania-and-new-jersey

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to have a actual full day off. No flowers, No editing, just photographing for the sake of photographing. Let me tell you, I love what I do, but sometimes it is nice to set out and photograph what you see, not what you need to capture.

Anyway, my husband and I took this time to go to explore. First, we went to the Port Jervis/Pennsylvania border to see Hawks Nest (a famous car commercial place). AJ has been telling me about this road for months and going there, it was everything he described and more. Nestled right next to the Delaware River, this road is stunning with all its twists and bends. While it was not exactly the safest place to stop for a photo-shoot, it well worth the danger.  But before we could even find a spot to pull over we went all the way down the mountain and stopped roadside for some pictures along the river where we straddled the NY and PA border. While the weather wasn’t what I would call ideal (very cold, windy, a little rain), I was happy to spend the day with my camera and my husband.

Afterwards, we headed to Vernon, NJ were we went to a patch of the Appalachian Trail called Pochuck Boardwalk. It was stunning, the sky opened up and the sun shined down on the boardwalk. It was brisk but beautiful as the sun set down across the mountains. There is nothing more beautiful than watching the light change as day turns to night.

Overall, it was the perfect day off and I walked away happy, relaxed, and with several amazing shots.  Check out some of my favorites below:

Baby Kason Newborn Shoot https://photographybysamanthafinch.com/blog/2017/1/baby-kason-newborn-shoot About a week  and a half ago I was lucky enough to take images of precious baby Kason. This little bundle of joy was so sweet and although he only had a few fleeting moments of sleep, he still was a trooper through out the whole shoot! It was a pleasure to take pictures for this perfect little baby boy! As a funny side note, I spoke to the baby's mother Stacy after the shoot and she said he passed out as soon as they left the studio. Funny how those things work! Here are some of the shots from his shoot!

2016: Reflection of My Photographic Journey https://photographybysamanthafinch.com/blog/2017/1/2016-reflection-of-my-photographic-journey I know what you might be thinking- man, she’s two weeks late with this post.  However, there is a method to my madness, and instead of doing this post on New Year’s Day, I opted to do one better; I decided to do this reflection post today, my 26th birthday!

I want to start by saying that I can pinpoint the exact moment when I realized I wanted to be a photographer. I see the memory vividly in my mind and that very experience serves as a daily reminder of the power of photography.

It has been a long journey since that first moment in my first photo class in 2007 (please refer to my previous blog post for the full story) and 2016 was another year full of learning, growing, and a constant desire to capture life’s best moments.

In the 12-month time span I not only shot well over 50 occasions between both my full-time photography job and personal projects (including weddings, parties, engagement shoots, bridal showers, etc.) I too was a bride and married the love of life, a experience that helps me better relate to my clients. Overall, I can sum up 2016 by saying that both professionally and personally, I have walked away from 2016 a better photographer and person.

And with that, I introduce my first blog for 2017, may we walk this journey together as I continue to document the stops along the way in my own words.

Here are some of my favorite shots of 2016.

A Brief Introduction: Welcome to the Daisy In Your Hair: Photography by Samantha Finch https://photographybysamanthafinch.com/blog/2017/1/a-brief-introduction-welcome-to-the-daisy-in-your-hair-photography-by-samantha-finch  I can remember the exact moment I knew I wanted to be a photographer, I see it vividly in my mind and every emotion that is associated with that moment floods back to me.

Ebbing and Flowing [VOX 2010]

Ebbing and Flowing by Samantha Finch (Spring 2010)

I was a junior in high school in my first photography class. I decided to take photography as my art elective because I always loved looking at images and thought it would be fun to learn more about the process of creating photographs.

It was the first day of class. After our professor (Mr. Cronk) explained the syllabus he took us on a tour of the darkroom. I followed along with the other students taking notes and observing.

He ended the tour by a large poster on the wall next to the windows overlooking the parking lot. He paused and then told us we will learn how to shoot, develop, and process our own images. He continued by saying that the next class we would learn about the camera and history mentioning words like contrast, lighting, depth of field, and composition.

He ended that first class by telling us to look at the poster and think about what we think makes it a “good” image. As a stared at the black and white image upon the wall I was memorized- and in that moment everything changed.

Well maybe not everything, but I defiantly changed.

Ansel Adam’s “Moon and Half Dome”

As I looked upon the crisp lines, dark shadows, memorizing landscape, and overall undeniable beauty of Ansel Adams “Moon and Half Dome” I thought to myself that if I could create a image that makes someone else feel how I felt in that moment then I would be happy.

That has been my goal everyday since.

So here is my website, a documentation of what I aim to do everyday- a platform to show my work- and a method to hopefully inspire other people like that one image inspired me.
